Last year I did a history project on Rosie the Riveter so when I got this assignment I had an idea for one of my photos. After doing so much research I felt really connected to all the rosies, so I guess seeing myself as one of them was kind of bizarre . The original photo is from the office f war information, and it's a picture of two workers named Ruby Reed and Merle Judd working at the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation. It was taken sometime during World War II when Rosie the Riveter was an icon.
We had to put some part of us in the photo, so I put my face over the woman in the foreground. That, to me, is just kind of moving, because so many women then were being oppressed, and working was there way of making money for themselves and becoming more independent. They really paved the way for modern women to have the freedom to get jobs and not have to be housewives. I also added some daisies in both of our hair because, in my research I learned that a lot of the workers were proud to be working, but they also wanted to keep their femininity, so they would put on lipstick and do their hair every morning. For people who know me, my changes probably made this more relatable, and for me it just makes me very happy to look at now. Overall I am very proud of how this turned out.
