- Lots of different people wanted to bring the reality of war to the people of America, Gardner just chose to do it by taking photographs. He wanted to show everyone how gruesome and horrifying war really was, and how it was not the glorified image everyone thought, he hoped by publishing these horrible pictures he could convince the people to never have another war.
- Gardner altered his photos initially by actually moving the people and objects to make it seem more dramatic, he hoped to get more sympathy from the people. He also took most of the photos with a stereographic camera, which takes two pictures and can be viewed through a stereoscope to produce a 3-D view. Sometimes he even painted the photographs with red paint to make them more striking.
- Now, I see photographs everywhere, modern cameras and the internet have made it easy for access to photos to be free. But back during the civil war, cameras were large and there weren't computers that you could put them on, so people would have to buy prints or go to a gallery to see photographs. Most of the factors are technology, there is so much more information possible to us now, than there was back then.
- I think that artist and activists even now use photographs to speak-out, they are a very effective way for people to see things without actually being there. Also writing things on the internet, similar to the newspapers which were popular before modern computers were invented.
