Hirut is a little girl living in a rural village in Ethiopia, she lives with her mother, father, and siblings in a small mud hut. She has recently started going to school and loves it, but she gets taken while walking home from school by a man who wants to marry her, he rapes her and locks her inside a dark room. She escapes and in self defense shoots and kills the man who took her. All of a sudden everyone in her village wants her dead and she is taken into police custody for killing a man. Meaza is a lawyer who is representing Hirut, while the case is going on she is allowed to let Hirut live with her. Hirut thinks Meaza is a bad woman because she never got married and has a job to support herself. Even though there is a trial going on in the city, Hirut's village has there own trial and the city government respects to a point what the men there decide. I think that the tribal law should have to obey the government, but can have their own separate laws. In Hirut's village marriage is important because it forms relationships and is mostly decided by the fathers. If a daughter is married to a richer family, then that wealth will help the family that she leaves behind.

This is how I feel after the talks about race this morning: The talks went well, I learned a lot about other people, and got to share my somewhat limited feelings. I think it provided a space for people to share their feelings about race. I think today was a step in the right direction to bring attention to fixing this problem, I hope we can build off of what we did today so everyone can talk openly about race.
